Central Asia

The five landlocked countries of Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, become increasingly important for the EC and the EU Member States.

With its analytical reports and inputs, ZSI supports the cooperation and dialogue in the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI), and contributes to a knowledge base on the state of the affairs of STI policies between the EU Member States and the Central Asian countries. Through the identification of challenges and formulation of recommendations on how to upgrade the mutual STI cooperation, products such as the White Paper on Opportunities and Challenges of Enhancing EU Cooperation with Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and South Caucasus in Science, Research, and Innovation provide valuable input for various policy makers, and come up with real scenarios explicating how to enhance mutual understanding and practical STI cooperation.

Dealing with Central Asia, ZSI contributed to the above mentioned White paper, executed a benchmarking exercise for Nanotechnology R&D organisations, an RTDI Policy Peer review for Kazakhstan was organised in the framework of the IncoNet-EECA project. Analytical support for the future perspectives of exploiting the Development Cooperation Instrument for support of S&T cooperation, the particular role of the Life Long Learning Programmes for S&T contributes to to a broader understanding of existing instruments, and gives guidance for future streamlining instruments that can be employed to support the development of the knowledge-based economy in Central Asia.

Particular emphasis of ZSI´s work was put on the development of STI indicators and the international comparability of S&T statistical data. Here ZSI established a vital exchange in and with Central Asia. Namely a number globally important organisations like OECD and UNECSO Institute of Statistics were successfully involved in our training activities aimed at the enhanced knowledge among the Statistical Offices from the region, as well as respondent organisations.
