The situation of 25+ NEETs in the EU: Preliminary results

Back to back with the first in-person project meeting within then Lost Millenials project in Bodo (Norway), ZSI researchers Katharina Koller and Stella Wolter presented preliminary results on the situation of 25+ NEETs in the EU accompanied by a participatory workshop to discuss the results.
The aim of the research was not only to gain an overview of who the group of 25+ NEETs comprises of, but also to find out individual and systemic factors that determine high, medium, and low 25+ NEETs rates across the Lost Millenials partner countries. Although the research was able to point out groups of people that are at higher risk of being NEET, the general conclusion is that the group is quite heterogenous and hence it is difficult to determine and generalise its specific characteristics. Some of the highest risk factors that could be identified include: Presence of (chronic) health problems, being young mothers, having low formal education and/or living in areas/countries with a difficult labour market situation. Due to the complexity of this group, these risk factors cannot be considered separately, but rather in most cases, people who fall into this category are often affected by more than one of these factors.
After the presentation of the results, all project partners participated in an interactive discussion in the framework of an adapted "world café" format covering the following topics pertaining to 25+ NEETs:
- Gender gap and gender differences
- Health and disability
- Rural vs urban
- Education systems and early school leaving
- Labour precarity
The final report will be published by the end of September.
