The Research Council of Lithuania orientates the research system towards the needs of the Lithuanian national economy, culture, education, public health and ecology; supports the development of science and research; analyses if the budget funds for research institutions are used properly; presents information on the state of science and studies and the use of budget funds to the Lithuanian public; maintains the qualification of Lithuanian scientists and the prestige of science in Lithuania; evaluates studies programmes, textbooks, and determines the qualification requirements for higher schools and research institutes, for research degrees and academic (scientific) titles. The Council also administers a list of research funding programmes, aimed at funding basic research, researchers mobility, and cross-border R&D collaboration.
