With a mission to ignite creativity and discovery where science and art collide, Science Gallery, since opening in February 2008, has welcomed over a million visitors and opened 22 exhibitions ranging from EDIBLE, which examined the future of food, to BIO-RHYTHM, which got to grips with music and the body, to INFECTIOUS, an exhibition which showcased the first ever live simulation of a pandemic using RFID technology. In 2012 Science Gallery pushed the boundaries of their exhibition format even further with the HACK THE CITY programme; which extended beyond the walls of the gallery to turn the city into a ‘playground’ and live urban hacklab. This programme invoked the hacker mindset, which finds ingenious solutions to systemic problems. To achieve this, Science Gallery brought together citizens, scientists, designers, programmers, researchers, activists, community leaders, educators, inventors, businesses and the city council, to address future and current city challenges and needs. Science Gallery is an ideal National Hub for the RRI Toolkit project, being uniquely located in Ireland's leading research university, Trinity College Dublin, with a recognised expertise and focus on public engagement with creative science, art and design in dialogue with RRI. Having largely focused on public engagement in its initial two years of operation through a number of highly successful exhibitions on exciting themes, Science Gallery has built its national and international reputation and, is now developingvits strengths in the area of RRI and education, through its Ambassador Program, the Idea Translation Lab and Designs for Learning, a design challenge to develop educational tools launched by Minister for Education and Skills, Mr. Ruairi Quinn, TD.
