UTOPIZE

Urban transformation through open participation and inclusivity for citizen empowerment

Applying New European Bauhaus principles for reimagining public spaces

The UTOPIZE project responds to major changes shaping Europe today—such as climate change, energy insecurity, pandemics, an aging population, and social inequality, by promoting new ways to transform cities. Drawing on the values of the New European Bauhaus, it offers a practical framework for reimagining public spaces that are environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and visually engaging.

Central to UTOPIZE is a fresh take on “utopia”, not as a fixed ideal, but as an ongoing, collaborative process shaped by community involvement. Through its UTOPIA Labs, the project brings citizens together to co-design and manage their neighbourhoods, using creative and technological tools to foster participation across urban, peri-urban, and rural areas. This inclusive approach strengthens community ties, enhances cultural relevance, and supports adaptability to future challenges, in line with the Bauhaus vision of Beauty, Sustainability, and Inclusion.

ZSI leads the Work Package on evaluation and impact assessment, with a focus on developing a framework to assess readiness for socio-technical transitions. This involves designing and implementing a comprehensive tool to evaluate the societal readiness for the use of digital tools in co-creating neighbourhood public spaces. The framework will be co-developed with stakeholders to reflect local contexts and priorities, incorporating New European Bauhaus methods to ensure that public acceptance and societal readiness for socio-technical transitions are achieved. We are excited to pilot the societal readiness methodology and to contribute to the understanding of societal conditions for generalising innovative approaches in urban innovations.
