Akronym: NRC KI

Kurchatov Institute was founded in Moscow in 1943 in order to solve the defence issue of the development of nuclear weapons. It was known under the name of "Laboratory № 2 of the USSR Academy of Sciences". Since 1960 it was named Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. The Institute got the status of the Russian Research Centre in 1991 and in 2010 it became the National Research Centre (NRC "Kurchatov Institute").

Nowadays the Kurchatov Institute is a multi-disciplinary research centre with an advanced experimental base. The main areas of fundamental and applied researches of the Centre are implemented in accordance with two priority areas of science and technology development in the Russian Federation:

1. Industry of nanosystems and materials
2. Energy and energy conservation

And also:
• Convergence of nano-, bio-, info and cognitive sciences and technologies;
• Interdisciplinary fundamental research;
• Information technologies and systems;
• Participation in global international projects.

Today Kurchatov Institute is: 100 hectares of territory: about 5000 of employees, including 2000 researchers, 900 PhDs, 21 members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
