AHHAA Science Centre Foundation (ESTONIA)

Introducing science and research to all publics

Akronym: AHHAA

AHHAA was established as a special project of the Department of Research and Institutional Development of the University of Tartu. AHHAA started its activities on September 1, 1997, and has had a strong and stable development ever since. In the spring of 1998, the first educational exhibition was organised in co-operation with the Finnish Science Centre Heureka. The purpose of AHHAA is to introduce science and research to all publics. Using interactive and entertaining methods and the scientific excellence of the 380-year old Tartu University, we try to overcome fear and prejudice towards learning. With the support of Tartu’s educational traditions and latest developments of the information society, we hope to provide every visitor with the joy of gaining new knowledge and pleasant pastime activities. Since 1997, more than 1.7 million visitors have visited AHHAA events. We have been organising at least two exhibitions per year. Today we have three different work-places: our main building in Tartu, the exhibition hall in Tallinn and a 4D adventure cinema in Tartu Lõunakeskus. AHHAA became a foundation in 2004, founded by Tartu University, Tartu city and the Estonian Ministry of Education and Science. Staff members all have higher education and come from different backgrounds. AHHAA has a strong team in co-operation projects and for many years has been a leading partner in the Researchers Night organisation team and runs the Estonian consortium. We are the biggest science centre in the Baltic region and we aim to make science and research subjects interesting for the public. AHHAA has been a leading partner in RN Estonia and is a third level partner in several other EU projects. To date we have been considered a trustworthy partner.
