Consortium for Managing Research Activities in the Venice Lagoon (Italy)

Akronym: CORILA

CORILA is a consortium between the University Ca’Foscari of Venice, University of Padua, University IUAV of Venice, National Research Council of Italy (CNR) and National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS). It is an independent institution, under Ministry of Research and is a “public equivalent body” as defined in the directive 2004/18/CE, art. 1 point 9. CORILA coordinates research on the Venice Lagoon. It facilitates interaction with the international scientific community and the Public Administrations; carries out interdisciplinary scientific research projects; organizes widespread dissemination of the research. These activities are carried out in close collaboration with national, regional and local administrations and agencies, facilitating the transfer of research findings to decision makers and citizens. CORILA acted as the national funding agency for research on the safeguarding of Venice. It is entrusted by the Venice Water Authority, an office of the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures, to monitor the environmental impacts during the construction of MOSE system, and to produce a new Morphological Plan for the Venice Lagoon. CORILA has been committed by the Veneto Region to implement monitoring activities of the Lagoon, according to the Water Framework Directive. For the Municipality of Venice, it helps in the UN Campaign “Making cities resilient”, managing the relationships with UNISDR and other international organisations. CORILA is involved in many European and national projects focused on a better understanding of the climate change, environmental impacts on biodiversity and the quality of the coastal and marine environment. CORILA is part of national and international networks - LaguNet - Italian network for lagoon research, EUROMEDLAG - Euro- Mediterranean Federation on Coastal Lagoons and The Coastal & Marine Union-EUCC. CORILA is involved in several European and national research projects, some of them of specific interest for DANCERS: KULTURISK - Culture of prevention for the Disaster Risk Reduction (FP7), VISION RD4SD - R&D activities for the Sustainable Development in Europe (FP7), THESEUS - Innovative technologies for safer European coasts in a changing climate (FP7) and has participated to the meetings of the European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction. Among the fulfilled projects: SPICOSA - Science and Policy Integration for Coastal System Assessment (FP6); ENCORA - European platform for sharing knowledge and experience in coastal science, policy and practice (FP6); COWAMA (INTERREG IIIA Adriatic Crossborder Operational Programme) for the harmonization of the control systems of environmental quality in coastal areas; GIS4EU (e- Contentplus); VECTOR - VulnErability of the Italian coastal area and marine Ecosystems to Climatic changes and Their rOle in the Mediterranean caRbon cycles (funded by the Italian Ministry ofResearch - 2006-2008). CORILA is coordinating the development the CIGNO system, a software catalogue of metadata and data, funded by the Veneto Region, and is realising the web Atlas of the Lagoon of Venice, in agreement with local, national and international institutions.
