Boundaries of Flexibility: The Give-and-Take Principle in Commercial Company Cleaning (German)

Section: Work and Equal Opportunities

In the sociological discussions on the subjectivation and precarization of work, there is broad consensus on the idea that logics and risks of the market in flexibilized capitalism increasingly affect workers. Empirically, however, flexibilization and the removal of boundaries with regard to work are still a matter of everyday social conflict and negotiation. Based on empirical case studies in the cleaning sector, this contribution illustrates how company social relationships and reciprocity relations render flexible work possible in the first place in this field of highly flexible low-skill service work.
