BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (Bulgaria)

Main public research organisation in Bulgaria

Acronym: BAS

The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a national, autonomous non-governmental organization, combining the functions of a Learned Society and a National Centre for Scientific Research. It comprises 52 research institutes, 16 research laboratories and centres, a National Museum of Natural History, a National Archaeological Museum and a National Ethnographic Museum. The scientists and scholars holding tenure at these units are less than 3,600, amounting to 16% of all Bulgarian scientists, but producing more than 60% of the significant scientific output of the country. This makes the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences the largest national centre for basic and applied research with a unique capacity for a complex interdisciplinary scientific orientation.
