Akronym: GeoEcoMar

The National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology of Romania (GeoEcoMar) is a research and development public institute coordinated by the Ministry of Education and Research. The main directions of research and development activities of GeoEcoMar are: (1) structure and function of specific ecosystems within the macro-geo-system Danube River- Delta-Black Sea, (2) studies on coastal zone integrated management, (3) global changes-climate changes, and (4), diagnosis and prognosis studies on marine science development, (4) support in implementation of environmental regulations at Danube river basin – Danube Delta – Black Sea macrosystem. GeoEcoMar first started its European and international co-operation in 1991 with the French Institute of Marine Biogeochemistry in Montrouge and the Cousteau Team, then expanded the European expertise in FP4 (EROS 2000, EROS 21), then FP5 - when GeoEcoMar coordinated the “ European Centre of Excellence for environmental and geo-ecological studies on River-Delta-Sea Systems” but was also involved in several other projects. Involvement in FP6 was expanded, and now is present in 11 FP7 projects (such as HYPOX, UPGRADE BS SCENE, EUROFLEETS, HYDRALAB IV, ARCH, PERSEUS, COCONET etc). Involved also in other INCO-Copernicus and PHARE programs of the European Union, as well as in other regional and bi- and multilateral programs (GEF-UNDP Danube and Black Sea Environmental Programs, IAEA). GeoEcoMar is presently coordinating several EC–Structural Funds regional projects (MARINEGEOHAZARD, MAREAS). MRINEGEOHAZARD is a Romania – Bulgaria Cross Border Cooperation 6,5 M.Euros project dedicated to the creation of a coordinated observation and early-warning system at Black Sea level between Romania and Bulgaria. GeoEcoMar operates a research fleet composed of R/V Mare Nigrum (a multipurpose ship, operating in the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean) and R/V Istros (the largest dedicated R/V from the Lower Danube operating also as a coastal ship). Currently coordinator of the MARINEGEOHAZARD and MAREAS EC Structural Funds projects.
