Digitalisation is shaping our society. It enables us to stay in contact with other people, supports many work processes and increases labour productivity and the availability of important services. However, it also creates business models that are based on precarious working conditions and, due to economic and political concentration processes, promotes a new level of surveillance, disinformation and manipulation that can jeopardise democracy.
At ZSI, we investigate the social impact of digitalisation in various contexts such as in rural areas, in education, work and employment, health, supply chain tracking, research security, and disinformation. As digital opportunities and risks are not evenly distributed in society, we are researching the possibilities and conditions for an inclusive, fair and empowering use of digital technologies.
