With a total budget of €5.07 million, EnduRAI addresses key challenges facing the manufacturing sector, including labour shortages, physically demanding work and the need to make industrial careers more attractive for future generations. The project will develop AI-supported technologies that help reduce worker fatigue, improve ergonomics and support safer and more inclusive workplaces.
Human-centred AI for manufacturing
EnduRAI combines wearable sensing technologies, artificial intelligence and adaptive human–machine interfaces to support workers during demanding manufacturing tasks. The project will develop industrial-grade wearable devices based on surface electromyography (sEMG), multimodal AI models that combine physiological and production data, and user-centred interfaces providing real-time feedback on fatigue, ergonomic risks and work processes.
The technologies will be validated in two industrial pilot environments of high-precision pulley manufacturing, and confined-space shipbuilding welding.
By bringing together expertise from biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, human–machine interaction, and the social sciences and humanities, the consortium aims to ensure that technological innovation remains centred on workers’ needs.
ZSI’s contribution:
Within EnduRAI, ZSI contributes its expertise in the social dimensions of technological innovation. The institute will support the project’s human-centred approach by addressing societal, organisational and user-related aspects of AI-supported workplace technologies, helping to ensure that the developed solutions are inclusive, acceptable and responsive to workers’ needs.
