As part of the EU project RuralBioUp, a comic has been released that tells the story of Paul, a bioeconomy innovator. The comic illustrates on a basic level how much persistence, knowledge, and support are needed to turn a bio-based idea into a market-ready product.

It sheds light on common challenges: lengthy funding applications, complex legal frameworks, financing gaps, technological testing, consumer acceptance, and the development of viable business models. Despite these hurdles, Paul’s story demonstrates that successful bioeconomy solutions are possible – when research, businesses, policymakers, and farmers collaborate.
The comic was developed as an outcome of the RuralBioUp Multi-Actor Workshop II (May 2025) and showcases obstacles that many small and medium-sized enterprises face when entering the bioeconomy sector.
More information and all results of the three-year project (October 2022 – September 2025) can be found on the RuralBioUp website.
