Key results achieved by PATTERN
Over its lifetime, PATTERN delivered significant results in the development, piloting, evaluation and dissemination of Open RRI training resources.
The project achieved:
- 500 Open RRI training resources mapped, covering emerging practices and existing learning opportunities;
- 200 policies analysed, addressing Open RRI training at European, national and institutional levels;
- 8 training modules fully developed, each focused on a key transferable skill area;
- 14 personalised training plans delivered across pilot organisations;
- 190 training sessions delivered across Europe;
- 5.800 researchers trained on PATTERN transferable skills;
- 23.000 visits to the Projects platform, from users in 46 countries;
- 200 Projects created within the PATTERN digital ecosystem;
- 1.100+ enrolments on OpenPlato;
- 3 Policy Briefs produced;
- 3 policy podcast episodes released on Spotify;
- 260 organisations reached through policy and dissemination activities.
Training modules and learning areas
PATTERN developed training activities around eight Open RRI transferable skill areas:
- Open Access;
- FAIR Research Data Management;
- Citizen Science;
- Research Integrity;
- Gender, Non-discrimination and Inclusion: With and Within Research;
- Dissemination and Exploitation of Research Results;
- Science Communication;
- Mental health leadership for early career researchers.
The training modules were co-designed, tested and refined through two learning cycles implemented across 14 pilot organisations. This process supported the creation of a new PATTERN curriculum and contributed to the improvement of training materials, formats and delivery approaches.
A digital legacy for continued use
A central outcome of the project is the open access legacy created for researchers, trainers, research support staff, universities, research performing organisations and EU-funded initiatives.
The PATTERN trainings are available here: https://www.pattern-openresearch.eu/trainings/
The full collection of PATTERN training materials is available here: https://www.pattern-openresearch.eu/training-materials/
The PATTERN training materials are hosted on Zenodo and released with open licences, enabling reuse, adaptation and further dissemination by institutions and training providers.
In addition, PATTERN developed a Digital Workbook on Open RRI trainings, designed to help users navigate the mapped resources and identify relevant training opportunities, tools and materials. The workbook builds on the project’s mapping of more than 500 Open RRI training resources and supports the continued discoverability and reuse of existing materials.

The PATTERN digital ecosystem, including OpenPlato and Projects, further supports independent learning, project-based learning, mutual exchange and the long-term sustainability of the project’s outputs.
Policy outputs and recommendations
PATTERN also produced two Policy Briefs to support the uptake and institutionalisation of Open RRI training.
The First PATTERN Policy Brief focused on the policy landscape for Open RRI training at European, national and institutional levels. It identified gaps related to sustainable funding, holistic approaches to Open RRI, policy implementation, monitoring mechanisms, and the recognition of Open Science practices in research assessment.
The brief recommended stronger alignment between European, national and institutional policies, better integration of Open RRI training into strategic priorities, and improved monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to support implementation.
The Second PATTERN Policy Brief built on the results of the first learning cycle and focused on the sustainable adoption of Open RRI training through better alignment between EU and institutional policies.
Its recommendations highlighted the need to:
- embed Open RRI training into doctoral and postdoctoral programmes;
- recognise Open RRI training through micro-credentials, digital badges and accreditation pathways;
- support persona-based and flexible learning paths;
- ensure inclusive, multilingual and accessible training materials;
- promote the reuse of Open RRI training resources;
- strengthen coordination between academic and non-academic ecosystems;
- recognise Open RRI training as part of researchers’ professional development.
Together, the Policy Briefs provide practical guidance for policymakers, research funders, universities, research organisations and institutional leaders seeking to mainstream Open RRI skills in Europe.
Final event: PATTERNs of Change
To mark the conclusion of the project, PATTERN organised its final event, “PATTERNs of Change: Building an Open and Responsible Future for European Research”, in Brussels in April 2026.
The event brought together policymakers, research organisations, SMEs, EU-funded projects and other stakeholders to reflect on the future of Open RRI training and its role in European research.
The programme included policy-oriented sessions, a High-Level Policy Roundtable on aligning researchers’ needs with EU-driven policies, exchanges with sister projects, a Story Slam dedicated to lessons learned, and a poster and networking session.
