At this inaugural European Flagship Conference on Research Security in Brussels, Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva announced new measures to strengthen research security across the EU. She emphasised the urgency of research security by means of several examples:
- Research security, together with academic freedom, will become part of the ERA Act;
- Horizon Europe Regulation (2028-2034): provisions on resilience and security;
- the establishment of a new European Centre of Expertise on Research Security inside the European Commission.
Other new EU initiatives highlighted at the conference are the creation of a due diligence platform to help researchers to assess risks of international cooperation and a new common methodology for Member States to test the resilience of their research-performing organisations.
