ZSI cooperates in lifting Ukrainian neuroscience research

6. Aug. 2019

NEUROTWIN helps to re-establish the Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology as an international centre of excellence

In August one of ZSI's most recent projects officially started. Called NEUROTWIN - Pan-European twinning to re-establish world-level Neuroscience Centre in Kiev this project is a Horizon 2020-funded Twinning action, which is funded under the particular "Spreading Excellence and Widening Participation" scheme within Horizon 2020. Twinning actions, generally speaking, aim to bringing together partners from similar research/innovation fields in order to foster institutional networking and stimulate the exchange of skills. They link the targeted institution (from one of Horizon 2020's widening countries) with at least two internationally leading counterparts in Europe. Activities like short-term staff exchanges, expert visits, on-site or virtual trainings, workshops, conference attendance, dissemination and outreach are supported.

NEUROTWIN is coordinated by the Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology (BIP) of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine based in Kyiv, which, at the same time, is the targeted institution for this twinning action. During Soviet times the institute was renowned for its internationally oustanding research in the field of neurosciences. Afte the collapse of the Soviet Union, the institute went through difficult times, especially in terms of funding and the management of its human ressources. Through this Twinning action the institute wants to make up some of this leeway caused by the political changes and bring back its scientific research to a world-class level.

Project partners are the Technical University of Munich, University College London, Uppsala University, Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology in Porto and ZSI - Centre for Social Innovation GmbH.

Over the next three years, NEUROTWIN helps to increase the scientific output of BIP and to improve its quality through continuous training of research staff in academic writing and through boosting the quality of post-graduate education. NEUROTWIN accelerates the communication with policy makers and relevant stakeholders in Ukraine advocating the importance of neuroscience and neurology research for the improvement of public health and biomedical education. NEUROTWIN steps up and stimulates the scientific excellence and innovation capacity in the field of cellular and molecular neuroscience, as well as strengthens the scientific collaboration and international standing of the partners involved.

ZSI leads the work packages 4 "Improving BIP funding and innovation capacity" and 5 "Communication/Dissemination/Exploitation" of NEUROTWIN.
