News about VERA: “Forward Visions on the European Research Area”

The European Commission FP7 funded project “Forward Visions on the European Research Area” (VERA) is tasked to provide relevant strategic intelligence for the future governance of the research, technological development and innovation (RTDI) system in Europe.

In the year of transition between FP7 and Horizon 2020 and in view of the Europe 2020 strategy, a group of VERA researchers, including from ZSI, publishes the “ERA Fabric Map”, a report aimed at offering a clear and digestible view on ERA’s current setup future direction as envisaged in current policy-making.

The ERA Fabric Map first gives a snapshot of the ERA today. It looks at the division of responsibilities between EU and Member States, and at institutions and bodies involved in the European research system. Starting from the six ERA dimensions described in the ERA Green Paper, the report then looks where we are today, and which direction the future is taking, given the policy context of Europe 2020. Involvement of stakeholders in further building the ERA is looked at by analysing their involvement in a number of existing ERA instruments, using a taxonomy of stakeholder roles and functions.

The report (D6.1) has been written by experts from the European Commission Joint Researcher Centre’s Institute for Prospective Technological Studies, Fraunhofer’s Institute for Systems and Innovation Research and ZSI. It is an official deliverable of the VERA project and will be updated twice in the project’s lifetime.
