The way forward in aligning transnational R&I funding and activities in the Danube Region
Date: 30. October 2015
Section: Research Policy & Development
The workshop will be held in cooperation with the Priority Area 7 “Knowledge society” and will generally focus on how to make the Danube Region a joint Danube Research and Innovation area for the benefit of the people living in the Danube Region.
Background information
The Priority Area 7 “Knowledge society” is in its essence confronted with the challenge of a fragmented funding landscape for research and innovation (R&I) in the Danube Region calling for coordination and harmonization of transnational funding mechanisms. This is not only true for single projects or instruments but also concerns the strategic cooperation and co-ordination of national and EU funding schemes and programmes.
To explore potential viable paths for such coordination and cooperation mechanisms, two initiatives have been set up by PA7.
A) A feasibility study has been launched to explore ways of joint funding activities in the region and its results will be available for the Ulm Forum;
B) A Working Group on the coordination of funding mechanisms was established and operates regularly to foster the dialogue between the different countries and initiate joint pilot activities.
The efforts dedicated to the coordination of joint funding mechanisms under PA7 are supported by activities in the frame of the FP7 funded networking project Danube-INCO.NET coordinated by ZSI). Within this project, pilot actions in cooperation with funding networks (f. ex. EUREKA) are implemented, and ways for establishing a funding parties platform for the Danube region and scaling up coordinated funding mechanisms to a more extended level are explored.
The Joint Research Centre has launched a specific policy brief in 2014 on “ Developing Danube R&I Projects across Borders – How to Make the Joint Use of EU-Funds a Reality?” and latest developments in their activities will be discussed. Best practice examples in the opening up of national programmes from Danube countries complement the endeavours.
The planned panel discussion will be based on the results of the feasibility study, the acheivements of the Danube-INCO.NET project, best practice examples from the opening up of national programmes and first pilot activities towards a better coordination of R&I funding in the Danube Region. The event will take place on Friday, 30th October - 14.00 - 15.30. Find more information here.
