Demography and ageing in the EU-SPI

The EU-SPI pilot project organises a series of virtual peer-learning workshops

On 6th of October 10.00-11.30 CET the topic of ‚Ageing and demographic changes‘ was on the ageinda. Such changes in society require changes in services and practices, and they shape our understanding of what constitutes social progress. The most important demographic progress in Europe (and in most parts of the world) is the ageing of the population. This is the result of two separate processes: long-term fall of fertility and increased life expectancy. The latter is the result of processes, like:

  • reduction of child mortality;
  • advances in public health and medical technologies;
  • increased awareness of benefits linked to a healthy lifestyle;
  • a move away from heavy labour towards tertiary occupation;
  • improved living conditions.

The event starts with a background presentation by Balint Herczeg on the statistical indicators and how they might relate to measuring social progress. Experiences are then shared by the regions of Centro and Eastern Slovenia. The event is concluded by a presentation of work done in an INTERREG Alpine Space project in Austria, by ZSI colleague Irina Vana.

The event is moderated by Elke Dall (ZSI).

The agenda and background document for the workshop can be found below and on the website of the EU-SPI pilot project (www.eu-spi.eu)
