1. Mär 2024
The PATTERN project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme (grant agreement No 101094416), has released its report: ‘State of the Art of Open and Responsible Trainings, PATTERN WP1 D1.1’. This comprehensive report aspires to mark an important milestone in advancing Open Science (OS) and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) by mapping over 500 training opportunities tailored for researchers at various stages of their careers, primarily focusing on Europe.
Key Objectives of the Report:
- Mapping training opportunities: this report provides an extensive overview of OS and RRI training opportunities, catering to the diverse needs of researchers.
- Identifying gaps and opportunities: the study critically identifies existing gaps and new opportunities in OS and RRI skills training, offering valuable insights for future developments.
- Conveying trends and insights: it presents current trends and insights into OS and RRI skills training, both within Europe and globally.
The PATTERN Consortium, comprising partners across Europe with deep expertise in eight key Open RRI transferable skill areas conducted this research.
The areas include: Open Access, FAIR Data Management, Citizen Science, Research Integrity, Gender and Inclusion, Dissemination and Exploitation of Results, Science Communication, and Management and Leadership.
Methodology and Findings:
- Through collaborative knowledge gathering, desk research, and surveys, PATTERN has identified a diverse range of training resources.
- The study includes various course-type activities such as workshops, e-learning modules, alongside static resources like guides, webinar recordings, and reports.
- The formats mapped span in-person, online, blended, informal, and formal training methods.
- Approximately 250 digital and freely available resources underwent a thorough quality assessment based on relevance, accessibility, ease of implementation, structure, and clarity of language.
- The analysis provides a critical evaluation of these resources, identifying their strengths and weaknesses and illuminating gaps in training.
Implications for the Future of Research and Innovation:
This report is a key resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers. It not only maps existing resources but also paves the way for developing new, innovative training programs in OS and RRI by highlighting current trends and gaps.
