Review: ASEAN-EU Science, Technology and Innovation Days 2014 in Bangkok

From 21-23 January 2014, the ASEAN-EU STI Days 2014, organised by the SEA-EU-NET project, took place in Thailand Science Park north of Bangkok. With over 500 researchers, research managers, and high level science policy makers from both the ASEAN and the EU region participating, the event was a great success.
The STI Days combined the official launch of the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation with policy dialogue, stakeholder meetings, innovation showcasing and scientific workshops. The ZSI team was responsible for organising a number of innovation related sessions. Two sessions focused on innovation systems in selected ASEAN countries and noteworthy innovation support programmes. These sessions were opened by Ms Cristina Russo, Director for “International Cooperation” at the Directorate General Research & Innovation of the European Commission.
A number of high-level country experts were discussing innovation support frameworks with the authors of a recent SEA-EU-NET study (among them ZSI experts Mr Florian Gruber and Mr Alexander Degelsegger). In addition, sessions on intellectual property rights and materials transfer agreements were held, organized by ZSI’s work package partners from SPI, Portugal, and the Research Council of Norway. Both issues were addressed from the perspective of research increasingly moving towards commercialisation and innovation related activities.
New to these STI Days was the live streaming of the Horizon 2020 Launch for the ASEAN region, which allowed participants from all over the world to virtually join the STI Days. New was also the live and interactive broadcasting of the workshop on climate change and resources, which was joined from participants in both regions.They were able to not only watch the keynotes but also to join the panel discussions with their questions. This broadcastings were also the kick-off for a SEA-EU-NET webinar series, which will bring together young researchers from both regions working in the same thematic fields. Last but not least, we are happy to announce that the use of the SEA-EU-NET twitter account (https://twitter.com/SEAEUNET) as a liveticker for the STI Days was a big success. It lead to live interaction with both participants in place and thematically interested non-participants.
